After a quick overhaul, Madeline emerged from the bathroom looking like she’d spent her whole day at the salon, a skill she acquired during her Mrs. Ridley years.

“You sure clean up nicely, Mrs. Delaney,” Mike said.

“You don’t clean up too badly yourself, Mr. Delaney.”

“But I had a day of leisure, while you worked three cases without any help. Speaking of which, did you come up with a backup plan if the lovebirds don’t invite us to join them?” Mike asked as he followed his wife out of their bedroom.

“Ha, ha. Since you’re asking me that, I take it you haven’t either,” Madeline said over her shoulder. After unplugging her phone from the charger on the kitchen island, she added, “I’m sure we’ll figure out something. Once I have a glass of wine and a chance to decompress, my mind will probably click into gear. And if it doesn’t, we’ll just have a nice, relaxing evening, and we’ll worry about our cases tomorrow.” Her cavalier remark provoked a dubious look from her husband.

“Yeah, right,” he scoffed. “You’ll be up half the night stewing over this if we come away empty-handed.”

Madeline wanted to lob back a pithy response, but she knew he was right. Loose ends and unanswered questions really annoyed her, especially the kind attached to ticking time bombs. It still irked her that she hadn’t picked up anything useful during her ambush at Adler’s. Other than learning Daphne Collins could lie with the best of them, the detour was a waste of time on an action-packed day.

“There are so many unknowns on our three cases at this point. I guess this tactic seemed more likely to bear fruit than staring at the case boards for another couple hours. Besides, even if we have to observe Daphne Collins from afar, we might learn something we can use to our advantage. And let’s face it, we’ve hit a wall in what should’ve been a routine case, so we have to come up with some new strategies.”

“I sure haven’t been any help. I left you to deal with everything by yourself. Unfortunately, it takes a lot longer to play a round of golf with someone like Carl. He knew everyone there.”

“It’s even worse with his dad,” Madeline said. “Though my plan to trick Daphne into giving me her cell number failed, I’m glad I got a chance to size her up. Now I have an idea of who we’re dealing with.”

“She’s pretty easy on the eyes, I’ll give her that,” Mike said, holding the front door open. “Not that she’s my type,” he hastened to add when Madeline smirked at his comment. “I mean, she’s attractive in a rather obvious way.”

Madeline laughed out loud. It always amused her how easily men were taken in by a pretty face and a shapely figure, and the lengths they’d go to deny it.

“She’s very attractive,” Madeline stated with professional detachment. She led the way across the limestone path to Mike’s pride and joy, the ’64 Mercedes convertible he inherited from his father.
